Romantic relationships are a major developmental milestone. They come with all the other changes going on during adolescence — physical, social and emotional. Romantic relationships can bring many emotional ups and downs for your child — and sometimes for the whole family. The idea that your child might have these kinds of feelings can sometimes be a bit confronting for you.
Parent-Child Communication Programs - Advocates for Youth
Get involved in our campaigns and help ensure young people's health and rights. Fact Sheets. Research has found that good parent-child communication around sexuality has many positive effects for teens — including helping them protect their own sexual health. Good parent child communication leads to better contraception use and lower sexual risk behaviors. Studies show, however, that many parents face challenges in being prepared to have discussions with young people about relationships, development and sex. But science-driven, skills-based programs exist which can support parent-child communication: helping to strengthen the bond between parents and children and ensuring that young people acquire the skills they need to protect themselves from unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and HIV. The programs are sponsored by a variety of organizations and religious groups.
The main objective of this paper is to understand the role of the family on the sexual experiences of adolescents from urban, disadvantaged settings in Baltimore and Johannesburg. Data were collected as part of the WAVE study, a global study of disadvantaged youth in five cities. Qualitative data were based on key informant interviews, a Photovoice exercise, community mapping, focus groups and in-depth interviews with adolescents. Quantitative data were gathered from an ACASI survey that was administered to approximately — adolescents per site. This lack of parental presence was perceived to result in adolescents feeling an overall lack of adult support and guidance.
